Our Tech Community

Northwest Florida’s technology community is inventive, enterprising, determined, and inspired. We serve a global clientele with leading-edge products and services.

Aerospace, aviation, defense, cybersecurity, information technology, and high tech manufacturing are all growing industries along Florida’s gulf coast.

The region is home to one of the largest concentrations of aviation, aerospace, and defense assets in the world. Our numerous military bases draw U.S. defense contractors, international companies, and commercial aviation. With aviation-focused businesses, industrial parks and supplies and developers on all tiers, this is the place where cutting-edge research and development becomes tomorrow’s technology.

Bringing these ideas from the drawing board to reality are our 850 traditional and advanced technology manufacturing companies with more than 25,000 employees.

Our area is also a prime location for cybersecurity businesses looking for workers with the expertise needed to compete in this rapidly evolving industry. Our diverse IT strengths include  digital media, modeling, simulation and training, photonics/optics, and mobile technologies. Nearly 300 information technology companies employ more than 3,000 people in the greater Pensacola area.

Where are do our high tech workers learn the tools of the trade? From our own home state schools: Florida State University, the University of Florida, Florida A&M University, and the University of West Florida, with university centers of research in Aero-Propulsion, Robotics, Commercial Space Flight, and Composite Materials & Systems.

The Robotics Team at IHMC is developing software for the Atlas robot as part of the DARPA Robotics Challenge.
